W.I.N. Update - February 9, 2025

Sunday Weekly Update 2-9-25

Good afternoon, this is Rick Parker, Principal of Indian Land High School, calling with our Sunday Weekly Update. Today is Super Bowl Sunday!  One of the most watched Sporting events in history since 1966. Here are some interesting facts. Today, over 123 million people watch the game and billions of dollars are spent on commercials. A 30-second commercial cost eight million dollars. However, half-time artist that perform do not get paid due to union agreements. They only make up to $1000 per day for their rehearsal and performance. I hope whoever you are pulling for wins! Enjoy the game!

Speaking of games, our varsity boys’ basketball team has a big game against rival Fort Mill HS Tuesday night, 2/11 @ Fort Mill. Both teams are neck-and-neck for the championship. Let’s pack their house with our Warrior Fans to cheer the boys on! With their last victory over Clover, the Warriors locked in a 1st round bye in the 5A D2 playoffs. We had Athletic Senior Night for our Winter sports on Friday, 2/7. I am so proud of our student-athletes!

Shout out to our Band!

We had over 20 students make Region Band this year! Over the last two years we have doubled our representation each year!

We had a great Cancer Walk during FLEX last week! I am proud of our students donating to such a great cause!

A shout out goes to Mr. Tim Helsley and his students in our Building Construction Class! They are building a Display Home in their shop.

Jerry Rice, Hall of Fame receiver for the San Francisco 49ers, believes this: “Today, I will do what others won’t, so tomorrow I can accomplish what others can’t.” You reap what you sow! You eventually have to face up to the consequences of your actions. So I asked the students these questions. What are you putting into your schoolwork? What are you putting in your sports activities? What are you putting into your friendship? What are you putting into your relationships? The more you put in it the more you gonna get out of it.

Here is What’s Important Now for next week:

  • R5 Grading Period ended 2/7. Please check your student’s grades in PowerSchool to see where they are academically.

  • I set a goal for our student body to reduce the number of tardies to class by 20 percent. There is a minute bell that rings to remind students of their time. Being OTOT is an important habit to develop.

  • ACCESS Testing continues this week. All students involved in this testing need to be present at school and OTOT.

  • Tuesday, 2/11 is the Top 20 Senior breakfast event honoring them for their academic achievement.

  • Valentine Flower Grams will be delivered on Thursday, 2/13.

  • Friday, 2/14 is a Holiday. Happy Valentine’s Day!

  • Monday, 2/17 is a Teacher Professional Development Day - No School

Student Drop Off: You may have noticed that I had the curb painted yellow designating the area for morning Drop Off. Once you enter the designated yellow area and stop moving, please let your student out and not wait to you get at the front of the line. This keeps the line moving.

Attendance Protocols

·       To notify ILHS of your student's absence, please send an email, with any necessary doctor's notes attached, to the following address: ilhs.attendance@lcsd.k12.sc.us

·      You may also include the student's teachers' email addresses in the same email to let them know of their absence, but we must be notified at the above email address to properly code their absence. We do not receive attendance changes over the phone.

·       A few reminders:

o   Students are given 10 "parent notes" per year.  Missed class time excused with parent notes will need to be recovered.

o   If you have a doctor's note, dental note, etc. to provide, we can code the absence as "Medical" to help reserve your parent notes.

o   While you may send in hard copies of these notes, you can also simply scan/take a photo/screenshot them and email them to the attendance email address.

o   Please allow up to 48 hours for attendance changes to be put into PowerSchool.

o   For tardiness or early dismissals due to medical appointments, please scan/take a photo/screenshot and send in the medical note so we can excuse the tardy or early dismissal.

o   Students that need to dismiss early must bring a handwritten note from the parent or guardian to the main office with time and parent signature. Students will be given a pass to leave class at the indicated time (Phones nor emails will be accepted for early dismissal).

From our PTSO:

Join us February 22nd at this year's 2nd Annual Indian Land Gala. This event is a great way to connect with other families & community members and the silent auction is sure to have something to catch your eye! We have sold over 110 tickets so far and we want to pack the house!

What is the Indian Land Gala? A way to bring parents, staff and community members together to support Indian Land High School and hosted our first Indian Land Gala. Over 15 businesses from Indian Land are partnering with us and more than 120 people are attending!

The money raised will be split between the ILHS Athletic Booster Club, ILHS Band Booster Club, ILHS PTSO & Ultimate Warrior.  Passed monies raised supported the Athletic Booster to purchase some well needed sporting equipment, Band was able to purchase uniforms (still not enough as our Marching Band is growing at an alarming rate) and the PTSO was able to provide 2 - $500 scholarships for seniors & provide a meal for over 200 staff members all 5 days of Staff appreciation week.  We would love to see you at this year's Indian Land Gala on February 22nd at the Ballantyne Hotel. Your support is needed to help us continue to provide a great environment for our children. If you are interested in sponsorship, please reach out as we have several options available.

Lastly, I leave you a quote from one of our students, Jorgy Emerson. “Be not afraid of growing slowly; be afraid only of standing still.”

Have a great week!
